One of the questions we hear most often at Moonlit Acres is:

"Won't I miss out on an important bonding period if my puppy goes to training before coming home?"

The answer is actually no—and in many cases, the exact opposite is true.

Many families worry that if someone else begins the training process, their puppy will bond more closely with the trainer than with them. After raising and training countless puppies over the years, we simply haven't found that to be true.

Dogs naturally bond with the people they live with. What our Board & Train program does is remove many of the frustrating parts of early puppyhood so that your relationship begins with trust, confidence, and success rather than constant correction.

Instead of becoming the "puppy police," you get to become your puppy's favorite person.

Why We Love Early Puppy Training

The first few months of a puppy's life are incredibly important.

During this time they are learning:

• How to communicate with people

• Appropriate social skills

• Confidence

• Self-control

• Household manners

• How to relax

• How to learn

Our goal isn't simply to teach commands.

Our goal is to create a calm, confident puppy that understands how to live successfully in your home.

Week 8–9: Building the Foundation

The first week after your puppy enters our program focuses on routine, confidence, and structure.

During this stage we work on:

• Sleeping through the night in the kennel

• Eating all three meals in the kennel

• Learning to settle quietly

• Beginning the Sit command

• Confidence building

• Appropriate puppy social skills

• Watching well-mannered adult dogs

One of the greatest teaching tools we have is our adult dogs.

Ruby, Priscilla, and our other experienced dogs help teach puppies appropriate manners, confidence, and how to communicate with other dogs. Young puppies naturally watch and imitate older dogs, making this one of the most valuable parts of our program.

Our 30-Day Foundation Program

This program is ideal for busy families who want help getting through those first challenging weeks.

During the first month your puppy learns:

• Sleeping through the night

• Potty training routines

• Sit

• Down

• Stay

• Here (Recall)

• Beginning leash skills

• Appropriate greeting manners

• Public socialization

• Confidence in new environments

• Exposure to children, adults, shopping trips, parks, and everyday life

By the end of the month, puppies have learned structure and routine while continuing to enjoy being puppies.

Our 60-Day Intermediate Program

The second month builds upon everything introduced during the first 30 days.

Training now focuses on:

• Longer Stay commands

• Improved leash manners

• Better impulse control

• Public manners

• Calm behavior around distractions

• Continued confidence building

• Increased socialization

By this point many of our puppies are capable of remaining in a Down/Stay for up to 45 minutes.

We also continue kennel training because we firmly believe that learning how to relax is one of the greatest gifts we can give a young puppy.

Most puppies at this age still require 14–18 hours of sleep each day.

An overtired puppy often becomes:

• Mouthy

• Hyperactive

• Jumping

• Barking

• Difficult to manage

A well-rested puppy is happier—and so is the family.

Our 90-Day Advanced Foundation Program

Our 90-day program brings everything together.

By the end of three months, our goal is to send home a puppy that is:

• Calm

• Confident

• Social

• Well-mannered

• Responsive

• Enjoyable to live with

Many puppies completing this program have earned their AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) or AKC Urban CGC title before ever going home.  By the end of our 90 day program your puppy will be able to be placed in a down, you will be able to drop the leash and walk away.  Your pup will remain in the position until you release them.

That's something we're incredibly proud of.

"But Won't My Puppy Bond With the Trainer?"

This is probably the biggest misconception surrounding Board & Train.

Dogs bond with their family.

Your puppy knows exactly who takes them home.
